Replacing Missing Teeth With Dental Implants
Dental implants are a popular and effective way to replace missing teeth. They are designed to blend in with your other teeth. They are an excellent long-term option for restoring your smile.
An implant looks and acts like a natural tooth. It fits securely, even when you chew and speak. A single tooth implant does not involve treatment to your other teeth. The implant acts as a stable base for a prosthetic tooth, bridge, or denture. An implant may also help you keep a good level of bone around your teeth.
There are 3 parts to a dental implant:
- Implant
- Abutment
- Crown
We work closely with a dental specialist to provide you with your new dental implant, abutment and crown. The dental specialist who we refer you to will complete the placement of the dental implant (step 1 and 2 in above picture).
The specialist will first determine if you have enough healthy bone in your jaw to support a dental implant. Sometimes bone must be added by a special process, known as bone grafting, prior to the placement of the implant. What makes the implant so strong is that the bone grows around it and holds it in place through a process called osseointegration. This process can take several months to complete.
After the bone is completely healed around the implant, we will see you back at Caring Smiles Family Dentistry for placement of the abutment and crown (step 3 and 4 in above picture).
When reviewing your treatment plan, it is important to remember to take all three parts of the dental implant in consideration.
Dental implants offer several benefits over other tooth replacement options:
- Improved Functionality: Dental implants function like natural teeth, allowing you to eat and speak without discomfort or embarrassment.
- Durability: With proper care, dental implants can last a lifetime, making them a cost-effective option in the long term.
- Aesthetics: Dental implants look and feel like natural teeth, restoring your smile and improving your confidence.
- Preservation of Bone: When a tooth is missing, the jawbone can begin to deteriorate over time. Dental implants stimulate bone growth, preserving the jawbone and maintaining the shape of your face.
Regular dental visits are key to the long-term success of your implant. We will set up a program to help you keep your implant and the rest of your teeth healthy.
